Chicano theatre dates all the way back to the Spanish conquerors. As time went on, San Francisco and Los Angeles became centers of Chicano theatre and then eventually spread to Chicago. A central theme in the plays during these times was adapting to 'white' culture. The Great Depression dropped the activity of theatre, but did not destroy it. The new themes of the theatre focused on civil rights. Due to Cesar Chavez, the theatre aimed for social change with its works. His form of theatre helped spread and create others like it, focusing on social change. Many of the themes focused on the farm-worker. Other plays, such as Zoot Suit, brought awareness to things like racial violence. The Chicano theatre often had two languages woven into their dialogue, working in 'spanglish'. Just like Chicano theatre, Hispanic theatre flourished as a result of the civil rights movement. Many of the plays focused on religion and teaching the native populations about Christianity. The history of Hispanic theatre is mainly in parts; chicano theatre and cuban-american theatre, both taking place in different parts of the US. Mexican-American theatre went through some of the same themes as the others. Mexican theatre was also almost destroyed by the Great Depression. Though the theatre eventually recovered and went on the produce more plays with a variety of themes.
